INTRODUCTION

This Manual, and its associated series of Manuals and Handbooks, are intended to make available to you, the staff and students of the University of Bradford, all the information which you need on Health and Safety in the University.

The University is subject to the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, and its subordinate legislation, and this information is intended to accord with the requirements of that Act and its subordinate statutory instruments.

In compiling Manuals and Handbooks on Occupational Health and Safety it has been our intention that we should provide you with the information that you need but without overburdening you with a mass of information which, however relevant it may be to someone else in the University, is not relevant to your sphere of work.

Nevertheless, if you wish to enquire into safety procedures in any area of the University, a complete set of all the appropriate Manuals, Handbooks, Acts of Parliament, Regulations and other relevant material is available for consultation in the Libraries of the University. Manuals and Handbooks are also available in the offices of Heads of Departments and the University Safety Office.

The University Safety Adviser and the Radiation Protection Adviser are available to give advice on the interpretation of the Health and Safety at Work Act and its associated regulations, and on the Radioactive Substances Act and other legislation concerned with Ionising Radiation.

The achievement of high standards of Health and Safety is not a one-way process. No matter how hard the Safety Committee and the Officers of the University work, their aims can only be achieved with your co-operation. After all, it is your health, and your safety, which is at stake.

You are earnestly requested therefore to co-operate in every way with those responsible for health and safety in the University, in devising and maintaining the procedures which are necessary to maintain a working environment which is both healthy and safe for everyone; staff, students, and visitors in this University.
